HEALTHY HOLIDAYS: 10 TIPS TO STAY ACTIVE

Many people find it hard to stay as active when there is less daylight, colder temperatures, and busy holiday schedules. Setting some priorities now can help stick to the plan when life gets hectic.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW IDEAS TO HELP GET YOU STARTED:

1.) Get out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather! The air is cool, the leaves have turned, it’s the perfect time to escape to the park for a walk, run, hike or bike ride. Many cities have walking paths and parks that are full of color this time of year.

2.) Make it a family tradition to walk after dinner or play a group game outside, weather permitting.

3.) Use holiday shopping as an opportunity to be active. Walk as much as possible. Park far from the store. Go to the mall early and walk around for 30 minutes before shopping. Walk from store to store instead of getting back in the car, if possible.

4.) Sign up for a Holiday themed run or 5k! Participating in an event like this is a great way to hold yourself accountable and it is a fun way to get friends involved as well!

5.) Do some yard work! Whether it’s raking leaves, putting up holiday lights or shoveling snow, yard work is an unexpected way to get the heart rate up and work out major muscle groups.

6.) Building snow people, going sledding, skiing, snowboarding, etc are great winter activities and a fun way to switch up your normal exercise routine.

7.) As winter draws closer the possibility of taking an evening stroll in the park quickly diminishes. Plan to stay active by joining a gym. This is a great time to take advantage of special deals many places offer around the holidays.

8.) Workout in your living room! There are many free workouts that you can find on YouTube or Pinterest that you can do from home. You can also check out one of the many LevelTEN offerings, including the Well Rounded Athlete or workout templates that you can do at home or at the gym.

9.) Plan active social activities indoors (bowling, skating/ice skating, trampoline parks, escape rooms, etc) vs always meeting over dinner & drinks.

10.) Stretch while watching TV and add in some pushups, air squats, sit ups, burpees, etc. during commercials or between episodes.
